Real Wedding Story - Amie and Matt Smith

Matthew and I met when we were 15 years old working in a supermarket. It didn’t take long before we were an item. Unfortunately we broke up after a few months and went our separate ways.

12 months later we decided to get back together and have been ever since.

It was Christmas Eve 2003 and Matt was spending the night with my family and me. He was acting strange but I didn’t pick up on anything. After dinner we went to my room to watch some television. I sat down on my bed and turned on the television but Matt wouldn’t sit down. Matt grabbed my hands and stood me up. He mentioned about how we spoke of getting married and having kids and then said.. ‘So..... you wanna do it??’ I was like ‘WHAT!!! Have kids no!!!!!’ but then reaslised what he was talking about and couldn’t believe it!!! I was estatic!!! And he had even bought me a solitare diamond ring!!! (I had given Matt hints on what type of ring i wanted by cutting out pictures from Jewellery catalogues!!).

We had our engagement party at Brighton Cricket Club in March 2004. The invite list was a huge 160 people and our parents started worrying from that moment on that our wedding was going to be massive. I t was a great night but the next day was better... opening ALL THE PRESENTS!!

We both still lived with our parents so we set up some goals. The first goal was the save as much money as possible and buy a house together. So for 3 years Matt and I saved for our deposit for our house (OK I shouldn’t be taking the credit for the saving part). Our second goal was to get married once we had bought our house.

So in March 2007 we bought our first house together and have made it our home. We then became proud parents to our fur baby Zeus.

The wedding planning started as soon as we moved into our house.

We really wanted our whole wedding to be at The Lakes Resort, West Lakes. So really we chose our venue before we set the date. The only Saturday we could get married at The Lakes Resort was August 30th 2008...so we booked to have our ceremony and reception there.

We both didn’t need to stress about who we were going to have as our bridal party. We knew straight away who we were going to have.

My bridesmaids were Jenn- My best friend, Naomi- My best friend, Rebecca- Matt’s Sister and Emma- a friend I had known since kindergarten.

Matt’s groomsmen were Jacob- Matt’s best friend, Peter- Matts Best friend, and my two brothers Corey and Dylan.

Our flower girl was Jasmyn. She is Matt’s cousins beautiful 5 year old daughter!

Time flew and before we knew it, it was the day before the wedding.

I had hired the presidential suite of The Lakes Resort to stay with my bridesmaids the night before the wedding and Matt stayed at home with his Best Man, Jacob.

We girls had a ball at the resort, we drank champers, did our nails, and ordered pizza and watched Bring it on. I gave the girls their gifts which were Dressing gowns personalised with their names on them, a bottle of FCUK perfume to wear on the day and some wedding tissues.

Matt gave his groomsmen a pair of cufflinks and a bottle of Hugo Boss aftershave.

I woke on the day of our wedding by my human alarm clock & Maid of Honour Jenn. It was an early 6am, but we had to have breakfast before the hairdresser came at 730am.

So we went down for our buffet breakfast... I could hardly eat but I forced down some eggs and bacon. Before heading back up to our room we went outside so I could stab a fork into a tree. (I had read an old wives tale that if you stuck a fork in a tree it wouldn’t rain on your wedding day!) So there I was stabbing a palm tree so the fork would stay in the tree.

The hairdresser and makeup artist came and before I knew it, it was 1pm and the photographer was here! So I went and put on my dress with help from my future sister in law and bridesmaid Rebecca. It was such a special moment we spent together and I’ll remember it forever!

The bridesmaids got dressed into their dresses. They looked beautiful! They each had the same style dress but in a different colour. They looked stunning together!

Well we all know that SOMETHING has to go wrong on your wedding day and my something was my underwear was clearly visible through my dress!!!! I was going to cry! I couldn’t believe I hadn’t tried on my undies with the dress before! Lucky for my VERY smart mother who suggested I go commando.... At first I was like ‘NOOOoooooooo’ but then I had no choice so off went the knickers!!!

The flowers were delivered to our room. I had a bouquet of white oriental lilies with Singapore orchids and my bridesmaids had a wristlet of Singapore orchids. The flower girl had a fairy wand decorated with orchids.

Then photographer spent some time taking our pictures then went down stairs ready for the ceremony.

All five of us were a bundle of nerves. My maid of honour played some trance/dance music before heading downstairs to get us pumped... on our way down to the ceremony we stopped at the bar and all had a Fresh Pink Pussy shot each! (I had to be careful not to spill it on my dress!!)

We were all standing behind the barrier when I heard ‘Our’ song play, Heaven by DJ Sammy (the slow version). My bridesmaids one by one went down the aisle while I waited with my dad for our part of the song to enter... just before walking down the aisle I saw a tear in my dad’s eye.... then I cried!!! We started walking down the aisle towards Matt, I was crying like a baby and he had the biggest ever grin on his face... I’ll never forget that look on his face!

The ceremony went well... though I did get a little boredJ. When our celebrant Nicholas Kermode had finished our ceremony I leant over a whispered into Matt’s ear “I’m not wearing any knickers” you should have seen his face!!!!!!

After the ceremony we had a 20 seater bus waiting to take us all for our photos. That’s when I noticed the rain... but I got over it quite fast!

The photos were so much fun even in the rain! Our faces were hurting from all the smiling.

After a few hours it was time we headed back to The Lakes Resort for pre-dinner drinks up in the presidential suite. Matt and I sat down and got to spend a maximum of 10 minutes ‘chatting’ about the day, it was nice just being ‘Us’ for those 10 minutes before being called away for more photos.

WE had more photos before heading back downstairs for the reception.

The Rocky theme song played as we entered the reception. Everyone was laughing and clapping, it was soooo funny!

It was really nice to sit there and see all the hard work I had done. The tables named after love and marriage were popular and the bonbonniere of noodle boxes with five conversation hearts looked stunning amongst the table decorations.

The Cake looked fantastic! It was a 3 tier Mississippi Mud cake with Oriental lilies running down the side. It was made by a family friend who is a cake maker/decorator.

We had a beautiful meal... but everyone kept ordering shots for the bridal table so before long we were getting a bit messy!!

2 minutes before speech time Matt told me he couldn’t do his speech (he hates public speaking) so I got up and did a speech on behalf of both of us.

All the formalities were done and it was party time! The dance floor was always full and music was pumping well into the night! It was just what we wanted... A big party to celebrate our love!

Time came for Matt and me to leave but we didn’t want to so we told the MC not to worry about sending us off... and we were one of the last couples at the reception. It was great saying goodbye to our guests as they left... plus we didn’t want to leave to party!!!

We spent our first night together in the presidential suite at The Lakes Resort and woke the next morning with a hangover but smiles on our faces from such a wonderful day we had.

If we could do it all again we wouldn’t change a thing!

Three days after the wedding we went on our honeymoon. We went along the Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne with our Fur baby Zeus. We had a beautiful time together and it was nice not to think and talk about planning a wedding for a change!

Our relationship hasn’t changed since getting married if anything it has made us closer! I love being called Mrs. Smith and I love referring to Matt as my husband! I can’t wait to see what else our future holds for us.
