Black and White Wedding Theme

The black and white theme is classic, striking and simple, yet sophisticated. Many people have the misconception that this theme is stark, bare and ‘cold’. How wrong they are! The black and white theme can be very warm and is so versatile. This theme works well with no many venue locations as it can adapt to its surroundings.

If you’re keen on having a black and white theme, but want to add a splash of colour here and there, got for it! Nothing can clash with the simplicity of the black and white shades. Some popular extra colours are red, pink or gold. Don’t go overboard with your extra colour though, you want it to accent the black and white, not overpower it.

Decorations:

Start with a white table cloth and add black accents to it. A Black satin table runner will work wonders as it’s the highlight of black you want, with a soft sheen. Go with black napkins and highlight them with a diamante napkin ring or a single white rose. Go nuts with tea light candles for warmth on your table. Some ideas for incorporating candles are:

- Have a fish bowl for the centrepiece filled with black and white floating candles

- Add candle votives around an existing centrepiece

- Add a large black candelabra as the centrepiece with white, tall candles sitting on a mirror base. The mirror base will reflect the light from the candles and create a warm glow.

Flowers:

Flowers are so important in any wedding theme. Fill the room with as many flowers as you can to make it soft. Flowers work wonderfully with the black and white theme as they add softness and femininity to the shades. If you are having an extra colour in your theme, here is the place to incorporate it. If you decide on red, in amongst your white flowers, have the odd red one pop up. Don’t go crazy with the extra colour in the flowers, remember, you only want it as an accent.

Some beautiful flowers to consider for this theme are:

Roses - They are available pretty much all year round and are the all time classic wedding bloom. They come in many sizes, colours and varieties so you will never have a problem finding the right one for you.

Tulips - As with roses, tulips come in many colours and look beautiful as a centrepiece.

Lilies - Lilies are such a beautiful bloom and also come in many shapes and sizes. These are perfect for the black and white theme if you want to add a splash of pink. A beautiful centrepiece could involve many white roses and the occasional big bloom of the pink oriental lily. This could also carry on to your bouquets and your bridesmaid’s bouquets.

Bridal Attire:

Go simple for your bridesmaids. A simple, black dress will look absolutely beautiful and classic. You want them to stand out and blend in all at the same time. Try a black silk dress as this will add sheen and lustre. For the men, a simple black tuxedo is very smart. If this is too fancy for your taste, put them in a simple black ‘business suit’ with a white shirt and black tie. Put the groom in a white tie so he stands out. Don’t overdo the suits with cummerbunds, and extra accessories. Keep the attire simple and classy.

As the bride, don’t feel that you need to wear a white gown. If you would prefer to wear on off white or ivory gown, then go for it! If you go for this option, make sure the ceremony venue has warm lighting and candle warmth to accent and compliment your warmer dress.

Wedding Favours:

Have fun with this. You are not limited, as most everything comes in black and white! Here are some ideas for your wedding bonbonniere: Black/white candle tied with personalised ribbon
Black and white lollies tied with personalised ribbon, or in jars
Bride and groom sugared almond bags filled with almonds
Black/white box with a single chocolate

Have fun planning your black and white wedding! Remember to keep it warm with candle accents and fill the room with beautiful blooms for femininity and softness. Remember, this theme is so versatile and will suit a modern wedding in a chic modern venue, as well as a venue with old world charm. Enjoy your planning, congratulations and good luck!
