Do you have a dream of having a beautiful Peonies bouquet but have been told they are out of season for your wedding?
We can help!
Not many people know this but Peonies can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 months! Here is how you can do it yourself at home!
What you will need:
* Peonies - allow 10-20% extra than you actually need. This will give you extra in case of damage.
* Scissors
* Plastic Cellophane or large snaplock bags
* Kitchen string or rubber bands
* Enough vases to store your flowers
* Spare fridge with nothing in it
Step One: Go to a flower market or a grower and buy as many Peonies as you will need - plus 10-20% extra. Only purchase closed buds not open flowers. The buds should be loosely closed, not too tight.
Step Two: Make sure you have a spare fridge with nothing else in it cleared and ready to store your flowers.
Step Three: Trim you flower stems, arrange in bunches of 8-10 and place the heads of the flowers in celophane - you can buy this from a florist or use a large snaplock bag. Slide the buds of the flowers carefully into the bag and secure the bag with a rubber band or kitchen string is best.The cellophane prevents frost from damaging your flowers.
Step Four: Place the stems in vases of water and place in the refrigerator. The fridge should be colder than a normal fridge temperature but not to freezing point.
Note: Vase water should be changed twice per week and not left to go slimy.
Step Five: Two days before your wedding remove the flowers from the fridge. Remove the cellophane wrap and all bands and ties. Trim the stems and place in a vase of room temperature water. Within 12-18 hours your flowers will bloom!
It's as easy as that!
As with anything there is always a risk. Sp make sure you talk to your florist about this method of storage and arrange a back up in case the worst happens! Check your fridge every few days to make sure it's still on and ensure you change the vase water every few days.
Enjoy your amazing Peonies bouquet!
