(ok, now that i've said that....)

It's been a while since I studied commercial law, but from recollection if you didn't have to sign a disclaimer or if there were no signs in the engraving place that stipulated no responsibility will be taken for the damaging of goods, then i think you have a case.
Like, when you do your dry cleaning, usually on the back of the docket there will be something to this effect (so they are not responsible for any damage caused to the clothing) or sometimes they have a big sign in the dry cleaning place that will say it.
I imagine the same rule would apply for engraving places.

I think you should take it back and tell him to replace it.
