Venues in Melbourne for the party, any ideas?

Ok, we are having our engagement party on friday the 23rd May.

We really only want a to book a room, have finger food, and a bar that people can buy their own drinks from.

We dont want it to be a big thing, hence why we will provide food but no drinks. We want ot have it in Melbourne CBD...

Can anyone suggest any places that are good? Bare in mind we dont really want to pay much in room hire if we can help it...

what is your budget and do you have ideas about what kind of finger food you want to serve people, there are heaps of places in melb to go, it really depends on how much you want to spend per person and how much you want to spend on room hire (some have inclusive packages)

I am having my engagement this Saturday night at Three Degrees which is in the QV centre. They have a fantastic function room upstairs, with a balcony with overheads heaters and as it's a 'pub' a huge range of drinks at great prices.

There are also some great places at Fed Square, a lot of bars have function rooms and the pub on the corner on King and Flinders (can't remember it's name) has just had it's function room done up and it is apparently Awesome.

I guess the thing you need to think of is how reasonable are the drinks, do they provide music, decorations and so on and how many people are coming. Another area with loads of great funtion rooms is South Melbourne which is close to the CBD and most of the pubs have private function rooms upstairs.

Thanks for the replies.. After hunting all day (I am impatient!! hehe) I have decided to go with The Pub at Crown.. The room hire is free and the food is good (have had functions there before).. :)

Well, Ive changed.. Not going with the Pub at Crown, they were only goign to section off part of the room for us, (tiny area!). So decided to head to The Elephant & Wheelbarrow on Bourke Street instead.

We get the entire third level to ourselves, our own bar and toilets. Plus I am ordering a stack of fingerfood for everyone, we are about 50-60 guests.

So now just have to do invitations!! :)
