My Mood:
The girls have given you a good idea of traditions, and the fact that you don't have to stick to them at all! But can be good to be able to say "this is what the groom's family traditionally pay for" rather than the difficulty of asking for a dollar amount.

My groom's family has less than no money - we actually help FMIL pay her rent - so we'll have to skip tradition ourselves. No father-of-the-bride, (died when I was 9) but my Ma has been saving a 'wedding fund' for me. :)

Thanks girls for all your advice! It has been a big help

FH and I have decided that we will just say that whatever they feel comfortable with contributing is fine, but we aren't going to ask them to help out with anything specific.

We are just really happy that they offered as we certainly weren't expecting it! That and my own father hasn't even mentioned the wedding!

Thanks Again!!

Sharona,
That's the peril of involving other people's money. I hear your frustration.

Dont worry Mez 85, my partner and i are paying for everything ourselves as his parents have no $$$ FH bought FMIL a car because she couldn't afford one (mind you we have two kids and only one income ourselves) And my parents aren't giving us anything because i told my mum she couldn't be a mother-of-the-bride-zilla lol. She wanted to have veto over every detail of the wedding - my dress, flowers, the guest list, location. photographer, menus, EVERYTHING. So it has ended up that she won't even come with me to look at wedding dresses!! So i understand where you're coming from about your dad.
